This early church, a frame building, was completely destroyed by fire on the 18 February 1906. Rebuilding began immediately through the efforts of dedicated church members. Crittenden Williams, grandfather of the late Lawrence Hughes of Arlington, designed and supervised the building of this new church.
Handmade molds were built
and concrete was mixed by hand on the site of the building. The bell
tower, built over the entrance, added beauty and dignity to the building.
The new church was dedicated in June of 1
907.
The memorial windows honoring the founders of the church were put in place
by their families when the new church was built.
Sunday school rooms were added to the church and the pulpit and the choir loft were moved to font of the sanctuary beneath the founders' memorial window in 1948. In 1955, the sanctuary and Sunday school rooms were remodeled and two additional church school rooms were added. In January 1964, a new parsonage was built across from the church at 6155 Chester. The Gym and educational building were completed in 1977.
The Arlington United Methodist Church has played a significant role in the history and life of the Arlington Community. Needs have arisen and have been met. Through the outreach of our church, many have been led to Christ and to a better understanding of our responsibilities as Christians.
